Baker lined up in midfield for the Young Dragons but was powerless to stop Rob Page's side sliding to a 2-0 loss in Cluj last night.

Second-half goals from Dennis Man and George Puscas ensured Group H leaders Romania picked up maximum points.

Page, the Wales U21s manager, said: "We frustrated them for an hour and we even had three great chances after they scored. Joe Morrell and Ash Baker were outstanding in the middle of the park, fighting for everything.

"Romania are top for a reason but we gave them a tough test."

Baker, capped three times at U21 level, has featured on six occasions for the Owls this season, with five coming in the Championship. He has been used primarily played as a right back.

As for Wales, defeat to Romania was their fourth of a failed bid to make it through to next year's finals in San Marino and Italy.

Page's team end their campaign against Switzerland at Newport's Rodney Parade on Tuesday, October 16.
