Sheffield Wednesday: Fit-again Sam Winnall looks to make up for lost time

Sam Winnall is itching to get back to the business of scoring goals following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, according to Owls teammate Adam Reach.

The centre-forward has returned to full training, having shrugged off a minor calf problem, and is pencilled in to return to action in Friday's Under-23s clash against Crewe Alexandra.

Should Winnall be involved, it will be the former Barnsley man's first competitive outing since suffering a serious cruciate knee ligament injury while on loan at Derby County last February.

Reach told The Star: "Hopefully Sam is going to be back in the foreseeable future.

"I know Sam very well. He is going to be raring to go when he comes back. He just loves scoring goals so he is going to be trying his heart out to get back fit as soon as possible."

As well as Winnall, Sam Hutchinson and Morgan Fox are also in line to feature when Wednesday's development squad entertain Crewe at Hillsborough, kick-off 1pm. Hutchinson and Fox are fully-fit again, having recovered from groin and ankle injuries respectively.

"This international break has come at the right time for some players to have an extra week  to 10 days off to get fit," said Reach.

"We have still got players like Gary Hooper, who is still trying to get minutes under his belt for the U23s.

"We have got Sam Hutchinson who is fully fit now so we have got players coming back all the time. They are not just young players or fringe players I'm mentioning. They are senior pros who have got a lot of Championship experience.

"It will definitely benefit us when we have everyone back. The Championship is a long season."

Reach is praying the Owls avoid the injury crisis which hindered their progress last term.

The talented midfielder said: "Hopefully we will not have as many injuries and niggles as we had last season.

"Injuries are part and parcel of the game. They are going to happen. People are going to get ruled out for weeks and months and people are going to get suspended but that is when other players in the squad who have not been playing have to come in and make an impact."
