Sheffield Wednesday: Fans starting to see the best of Owls defender

Wednesday fans are now starting to see the best of Vincent Sasso following a difficult start to his Owls career.

That is the view of head coach Carlos Carvalhal ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Preston North End at Deepdale tomorrow.

French defender Sasso struggled initially after arriving on a season long-loan deal from Braga. His performances were inconsistent and a knee injury also hampered his progress.

But since the turn of the year, Sasso has produced a string of solid displays, helping the Owls record three clean sheets.

Carvalhal, who has confirmed Joe Wildsmith (back) remains sidelined, said: “It is not easy for a foreigner to come to England, especially the Championship, and adapt. It is very, very tough.

“Vincent had a period where he must adapt to the way the strikers play and the way that referees act.

“He had a small problem in the knee but is okay now. He is doing well and playing at the level I know he is capable of playing at.”

With Sam Hutchinson and Michael Turner also available for selection, Carvalhal has an embarrassment of riches in the centre-back position. Indeed, the Portuguese chief has multiple options in all departments.

“It was very easy at the beginning of the season to pick the 18 and now it is very tough,” he conceded. “All the players are training really well. We are putting some in the Under-21 games to give them match time.

“They are all doing fantastic. If there was justice, I would put all of them in the 18. This is the hard part of the coach but I have to take decisions.

“It is good when you can choose the best players for each game. Internal competition is very important and we have a full squad and energy.”
