Sheffield Wednesday: Fans plan special tribute for Barry Bannan

Thousands of Wednesday fans plan on showing their love for Barry Bannan in tomorrow's crunch clash at Birmingham City.

Owls supporters will wear Bannan masks and dress up as bananas as a tribute to the popular midfield player at St Andrew’s.

It is all part of #BannanWeek, an online social media campaign recently launched by The Kop End Facebook forum and The Wednesday Week to celebrate the Scotland international’s stellar performances since arriving at Hillsborough.

Bannan is expecting a a few boos at Birmingham, having started his career at their arch rivals Aston Villa.

He told The Star: “The reception is not going to be nice but I will just try to block it out and forget about it.

“I will hear it but I will just turn a blind eye to it. Hopefully I will have the last laugh.”

The 26-year-old is focusing all his energy on helping Wednesday halt a three-match winless run.

“We just have to concentrate on our game plan and hopefully if we turn up on the day and play the way we can play with the squad we have got we will win,” he said.

“We knows it’s going to be another tough game , just like every other game in this league, but we have got to concentrate on ourselves, keep our focus and hopefully that will be enough to get the three points.”

When asked if the Owls have set a points target in their bid to secure a top-six berth, Bannan, who was utilised in his preferred central midfield role against Burnley in midweek, replied: “No, not at all.

“We haven’t looked that far ahead yet. We just have to take each game as it comes.

“If you look ahead, that’s when you can get shot down so we will take each game as it comes and see where we finish at the end of the season.”
