Sheffield Wednesday fans' column: We need to be more direct on our journey

You can never accuse Sheffield Wednesday of being a direct team.

If you want to watch the ball travel from A to B quickly then we’re not the club for you.

Now I travel a lot, especially to get to matches. I’m all for passing through beautiful scenery and watching the magnificence of the English countryside but most of the time I’m eager to get to the destination.

If we were describing the Owls getting the ball from the keeper to the goal, we pass through beautiful scenery but if the pitch was akin to travelling from Sheffield to London we’d go via Carlisle first. We paid for these diversions last Saturday.

My first thought walking out of Hillsborough after losing 0-2 to Leeds was ‘you’ve been found out Wednesday.’ Neil Warnock discovered it last season when we played Rotherham United and other teams, who we should have been beating lower down the table, played the same game. All you have to do to stop the Owls is pressure the midfield and we don’t know what to do other than play the ball back into defence.

It might be pretty triangular football but in games against teams like Leeds and Burton who had a game plan, we don’t seem to have a ‘Plan B’. Liam Bridcutt and Alex Mowatt played Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan out of the game. Pudil was given a torrid time by Hadi Sacko which highlighted his lightweight defensive capabilities and Ross Wallace doesn’t help out enough. There are times Wallace just stands still watching the full back run around in circles looking for an outlet.

If you look at the match stats we’re better in possession, shots and shots on target but without a more direct approach we’re going to be spending more time in Carlisle than getting to our goal destination.
