Sheffield Wednesday fan column: Slowly but surely the Owls are heading in the right direction

As we approach the second international break it seems a good time to look at the state of play at Hillsborough.

The six games before the first international break we picked up 10 points, three wins, one draw and two losses. In the six games up to this break we have secured nine points, two wins, three draws and one loss to Nottingham Forest.

The last six matches have been more difficult. Four of the six have been in and around the top six this season and Aston Villa and Stoke City have squads that have the ability to challenge for the those places too.

It's fair to say we've been consistent in our points gathering this season. In comparison to previous seasons we're three points up on where we were last year and a point behind where we were the previous season.

We're third in the form table for the last eight matches. Sheffield United are top and West Brom closely follow.

At Hillsborough we're undefeated in six games, with four fixtures ending in a draw.

We're in the top six scoring teams in the Championship but 16th defensively.

What does it all mean? It means we're doing alright considering where we started at the beginning of the season, better than alright as we sit in the last play-off spot going into the international break.

I'm encouraged by what I've seen this season from Jos Luhukay's Owls side. There was an element of '˜expect the worst and hope for the best,' after we were enlightened about the transfer embargo.

The gaps are starting to open up between teams now. Only a few weeks ago there was just four points difference between first and 12th in the league. That tally has doubled in just a few weeks. Let's not forget though that while United laud it over us that they are top and above us, they are still only six points ahead.

We might be the tortoise in this scenario but we're a consistent tortoise. The hare might eventually need a nap.
