Sheffield Wednesday fan column: Is Sam Hutchinson future captain material?

At the weekend against Queens Park Rangers he put in a performance that was worthy of John Terry in his prime.

Had Sam continued to play at Chelsea there is a very real possibility he would have been partnering Terry in central defence.

He is clearly a better defender than he is a midfielder.

On Saturday he executed a double tackle in the QPR box at the end of the match that had Owls fans rising to their feet in appreciation.

The fans don’t even play ‘Hutch Booked Bingo’ anymore purely because he is so cool, calm and collected in the box.

Sam’s excellent performances only serve to highlight what a tough season Tom Lees is having.

He admitted a few weeks ago that he was struggling for form and he did look unsure of himself on Saturday.

Tom’s distribution was poor but despite this the defence looked tighter than it has in previous weeks.

I think it helped that the team were playing a more compact formation with a higher defensive line, especially in the first half.

In the second half when we dropped deeper we looked more vulnerable.

I realise I’m at risk of putting a hoodoo on Hutchinson by saying this but if he can stay fit he will be an even stronger asset to Sheffield Wednesday than he has been in previous seasons.

If we are to have any pretentions of promotion again we need solid, stable players at the back. Sam has that in spades this season.

As he matures could he even be future captain material?
