Nothing is guaranteed in the Championship.

A point David Jones was quick to stress shortly after completing his move to Sheffield Wednesday last week.

“Every game is a battle,” said Jones, who has four second-tier promotions on his CV. “You cannot take anything for granted.”

The midfielder is not wrong there. The second-tier is a relentless, unforgiving division.

As for Jones, he faces a fight to become a regular starter, despite dropping down a level.

Owls chief Carlos Carvalhal has a plethora of central midfield at his disposal, including Kieran Lee, Barry Bannan, Almen Abdi, Jose Semedo, Sam Hutchinson and Filipe Melo.

Jones conceded: “There’s a lot of quality at Wednesday, competition for places, and that can only be good for the team.

“There’s a lot of options in there the manager has to choose from, depending on what game it is and who we come up against, because in the Championship you see an array of different styles of play.

“Everyone will have to fight hard to play.”

Jones made his first Wednesday appearance as a second half substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Leeds United.

“It was great to get on the pitch in front of almost 30,000 and play for the team with the majority of fans in the stadium,” said the boyhood Owls fan. “I know I am 31 but am still learning and want to get better. I have still my own ambitions about what I want to achieve in the game. That was a big factor in me coming here.”

The former Manchester United youngster is determined to help the Owls end their 16-year top-flight exile.

“It would be amazing, brilliant, to come here and achieve good things,” he said. “I have had a lot of texts from friends who I kept in touch with since I was a kid, and they knew I supported Wednesday.

“They all said it was inevitable at some point that I would join the club.”
