Sheffield Wednesday have moved to ease their defensive crisis by confirming the permanent signing of former loanee Vincent Sasso.

The Frenchman, who spent last season on loan at Wednesday from SC Braga, has penned a one-year deal after an undisclosed fee was agreed with the Portuguese side.

The 25-year-old, who will wear shirt number 39 this season, made 19 appearances for the Owls as they reached the Championship play-off final last term.

Sasso said: I’m really happy to be back and this is better than a loan move for me. I know the staff, the club and all the people working here. This helps a lot because I know exactly where I’m coming into and hopefully I can help the team. We went from strength to strength last season, it was really good for the fans and a great experience for all the players.

"In part it was difficult for me because I had a small problem with my knee but now I feel 100 per cent. I am much more accustomed to the Championship, especially the physical side of the game. I know when the referee will blow his whistle and when he won’t. It is different in Europe and where I have been playing my football. I understand the intensity and I know exactly what to expect. There will be no problem for me."

Sasso's signing is especially timely given Wednesday's struggles at centre-half, which saw them field Jose Semedo and Sam Hutchinson there against Burton in midweek. Tom Lees is expected to be fit to face former side Leeds this weekend, while Glenn Loovens is also stepping up his own recovery from injury.
