Head coach Carlos Carvalhal has called on the Owls to stick together as the Championship club seek to revive their stuttering promotion challenge.

Wednesday’s faint hopes of gatecrashing the top two were all but ended on Saturday as they slipped to a 1-0 loss against Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United.

Now March promises to be a crucial month in the Owls’ quest to secure a play-off spot for the second consecutive year.

Wednesday currently occupy the final top six berth but the chasing pack, which includes Fulham, Preston North End and Norwich City, will be encouraged by the fact that Carvalhal’s men have slipped up in their last two outings.

Carvalhal hopes the Owls will make home advantage count over the coming weeks. Three of Wednesday’s next four matches are at Hillsborough, starting against Norwich on Saturday.

He told The Star: “When we play at home, that doesn’t guarantee we will win every game but it makes us more strong. To be more strong, we need the support of everyone. It is a crucial moment in the season.

“Everybody wants the same from the players to the fans. Let’s be together and finish with the negatives. Let’s put everyone together and try to push everyone up. Let’s be positive to achieve something.

“Hopefully we will be in a good position at the end of the month. These things are only possible if everyone is together.”

Carvalhal is confident his players will respond in a positive manner when they take on eighth-placed Norwich.

“When we have one week to work and recover the players, usually we give a strong reaction,” he said. “We play three home games next month which will be very important. It will not decide anything but hopefully we can be in a good position at the end of the month.

“Norwich will be tough but I hope everyone understands that now is the moment we must be together and put a lot of energy in at Hillsborough to make our team more strong.”
