Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal happy to carry on placing faith in youth

Owls chief Carlos Carvalhal has told The Star he will carry on giving youth a chance to shine at Hillsborough.

Since taking charge of the Championship outfit, Carvalhal has handed first-team debuts to young goalkeepers Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith.

Lifelong Wednesday fan Dawson, who deputised for the injured Keiren Westwood in Saturday’s controversial defeat at Derby County, has started the last two fixtures and looked like he belongs on the big stage.

“Cammy and Joe have played because they have qualities and deserved to play,” stressed Carvalhal. “They have value.

“As I’ve said before, I don’t have any problem playing a 17-year-old or an 18-year-old if they have abilities. The criteria is quality.”

While Dawson and Wildsmith have particularly stood out since bursting on to the scene, Carvalhal has fielded other youngsters, including Jack Stobbs, James Murphy and George Hirst, the son of Owls legend David.

Speaking before Saturday’s trip to the iPro Stadium, Carvalhal said he was pleased with the progress of the club’s academy.

“We have moved a lot of things,” he said.

“Things are much better this season so far compared to last season.

“We want to develop the players in the academy and we believe that some of them in the future can play for the first-team and will be in the squad.”

Meanwhile, winger Jordan Lonchar penned his maiden pro deal yesterday.

The 17-year-old has committed his future to the club until 2019.
