Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal denies that he is a 'difficult' manager for match officials to deal with following his FA charge

He is, by his own admission, an emotional man.

But Owls chief Carlos Carvalhal is adamant he is not a “difficult” person for match officials to deal with in the wake of his dismissal at Aston Villa.

Carvalhal was sent to the stands after remonstrating over Vincent Sasso’s second half red card at Villa Park. Referee Lee Probert banished Carvalhal from the dugout after the Portuguese chief for leaving his technical area.

Carvalhal opted against appealing his Football Association misconduct charge and was fined £2,000 yesterday.

“I am a typically latin guy, a Portuguese, so I can have high emotions,” he told The Star. “But I am different from norrnal latins, because I come down easy.

“In that situation, if the referee came to me and said “listen if you don’t be careful, you go out of the technical area, I will send you off”, then sure I will not put one finger over the line. Absolutely sure.

“I am an easy person to control when it comes to my emotions. My emotions sometimes run high, that is the reality, but I come back down to earth no problem.

“I don’t think I am difficult to deal with for referees and fourth officials.”

It was the first time in his 20 months in English football that Carvalhal had been sent to the stands.

Although he accepted the FA charge and escaped a touchline ban, Carvalhal still believes the ruling was harsh.

He said: “I didn’t insult anybody, or use bad words, but they said I was out of my technical area. That’s why I was surprised.

“But I see a lot of managers come out of their technical area. I hope they don’t make a rule like this, or 95 per cent of managers will be out of the games.

“I accept the fine and decision of the referee.

“Next time, I must stay inside my technical area.”

After the Villa showdown, Carvalhal refused to comment on Probert’s decision to send off Sasso. But speaking at his press call yesterday, he explained why he reacted so passionately to the incident.

He said: “I understand the situation, the rules say I can’t go out of my technical area, but I was not complaining about the decision (to send Sasso off).

“The decision was like Fernando Forestieri last season against Hull City. Forestieri dived so he didn’t receive a tackle, and Forestieri recieved a red card.

“In the same situation (at Villa), Sasso didn’t touch him but it was a dangerous moment and their player dived. My player received a red card.

“So in both situations my players were sent off in very similar situations.

“But if you ask which was the correct decision, I think it was the decision in the last game.”

With Sasso beginning a three-match suspension, it is a big boost for Carvalhal that he can call upon Tom Lees again ahead of their meeting with fifth-placed Reading tonight. The defender is in line to make his first appearance since January 31 after recovering from a knee problem. Lees will partner Glenn Loovens, who has also been passed fit to play, at centre-back.

Winger Callum McManaman (groin) could be included in the matchday squad.

But Sam Hutchinson, Almen Abdi and Fernando Forestieri (all knee) are unlikely to be risked.

Carvalhal said: “It’s all about expectations. We are four points off fourth position (Leeds United) and teams who everybody is saying are having a fantastic season.

“When the expectations are not so high, and the teams are there (in the play-offs), they are having an amazing season. If the expectations are very high, and we are just a few points away, then maybe people feel the season is not so good.

“At the end of the season, let’s see what we achieve. I am sure all the teams will be like this, we play very good games, average games and poor games.

“I don’t think about that (failure), our target right now is fifth position. We don’t want to think about lateral things.

“We are honest, working hard, and focused on the game. These are the things we can control, the things we can’t control are not important.”
