Carlos Carvalhal expects his Owls players to respond in a positive fashion to back-to-back Championship defeats following the two-week international break.

“Usually when we have a defeat, we give a strong answer and it is what I expect from my players,” said the Portuguese chief.

While he admits Wednesday have plenty of things to rectify on the training ground before they return to league action at Fulham on Saturday, November 19, Carvalhal is adamant his side have not turned into a bad team.

He said: “The team has not lost abilities in one week.

“We performed very well against Huddersfield, Cardiff and QPR. We played well at Derby.

“The Ipswich game was a day where our players were not in the same shape as they have been in the past.

“We must improve things.

“We must get them (the players) more focused and playing more aggressively and dynamically.

“I like my team to be aggressive with and without the ball but we weren’t good against Ipswich.”

Wednesday lacked penetration on Saturday, producing a lacklustre performance as they failed to break down Ipswich’s well-organised defence in the second half.

“We came up against a wall,” said Carvalhal. “We tried to move players and break the lines.

“Ipswich were very compact and solid. Nothing that we didn’t expect. But, to open up these kind of teams, you must move the ball very well and play with a very good dynamic, especially between the lines to open the spaces.

“We didn’t discover the spaces. All the time we went against the wall.”
