Sheffield Wednesday: Captain Tom Lees sets sights on Owls revival

Carlos Carvalhal’s men have slipped to 10th in the standings following back-to-back league defeats.

The Owls, who were booed off after Saturday’s reversal against mid-table Ipswich Town, now trail sixth-placed Leeds United, who occupy the final Play-Off position, by two points and are 10 adrift of the automatic promotion berths.

Following the two-week international break, Wednesday resume their Championship campaign at Fulham on Saturday, November 19.

Centre-back Lees told The Star: “We have to respond to a loss with victories. You have got two choices really when you lose. You either let it affect you, sulk and your season goes to pot or you can come out and turn it around.”

Ipswich skipper Luke Chambers headed in a late winner last weekend to sentence the Owls to a third Hillsborough defeat this term. Gary Hooper had levelled things up in the 36th minute after Tom Lawrence’s fine solo strike.

Carvalhal refused to pull any punches post-match, admitting that the team “didn’t perform” to their usual standards and were a “shadow” of themselves.

“It was a frustrating day all round for everyone,” conceded Lees. “It was a disappointing result.

“We needed the win and we want to be winning our home games. It’s a game that we targeted to win and it’s disappointing that we didn’t.

“You have to give Ipswich some credit. They worked hard and had done their homework on us. They nullified us and stopped us from playing but I think we have to do better as well.”
