Sheffield Wednesday: Caolan Lavery a target for Coventry City

Lavery’s contract with Wednesday expires this summer and fresh terms are unlikely to be offered with the Northern Irish forward well down the pecking order at Hillsborough.

According to BBC Coventry, the Sky Blues are ready to open talks with the Canada-born 23-year-old.

Portsmouth are also likely to be interested in a deal for Lavery after his successful loan spell at Fratton Park before Christmas.

Whichever club ultimately signs Lavery, they will be forced to pay a ‘development compensation’ fee to Wednesday due to his age and his time spent at Hillsborough.

If a compensation fee cannot be agreed between the two clubs, the deal will go before a tribunal which will decide a suitable payment for the Owls.

Lavery joined Wednesday in the summer of 2012 as a development player and went on to make 39 appearances, scoring six goals.

Though used regularly by former boss Stuart Gray, the forward made two appearances under Carlos Carvalhal, both coming in early rounds of the Capital One Cup. He was named on the bench by Carvalhal for just a single league game last season.

Jose Semedo – who is widely expected to be released by Wednesday – has been on holiday in Ibiza with good friend Cristiano Ronaldo, ahead of the Real Madrid superstar’s Euro 2016 duty with Portugal.

Wednesday are set to announced their retained list early this week once affected parties return from their initial summer holidays.

Goalkeeper Lewis Price and winger Ross Wallace have also reached the end of their contracts, along with Lavery and Semedo.
