Wednesday signed off ahead of the second international break in style, winning at Ashton Gate after a superb second half double from substitute Lucas Joao.

Matty Taylor pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining from the penalty spot after Josh Onomah brought down Callum O'Dowda but the Owls held their nerve to pick up maximum points and move up to sixth in the rankings.

Luhukay said: "We made a stupid foul for the penalty; we knew the last 10 minutes it could be dangerous but the team defended very well and were 100 per cent consistent. I think our three central defenders were very consistent with their defensive work."

He reserved special praise for goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, who pulled off a fine save to thwart Robins striker Famara Diedhiou in the first half, and Chelsea loanee Michael Hector, who was a pillar of strength at the heart of the three-man defence.

"Cammy gave us hope for the second half," said Luhukay. "He kept us in the game.

"Michael was fantastic in the 90 minutes but Tom Lees and Daniel Pudil also deserve credit. Every free-kick and corner was very dangerous and came into the 18-yard box but the three cleared what they could."

The Owls chief said his team had demonstrated that they had learned lessons from their recent draw with promotion hopefuls West Bromwich Albion where they let slip a two-goal lead.

Luhukay, who made three changes to his starting eleven, dropping Joey Pelupessy, Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu to the bench, said: "It was unbelievable how the team fought. They showed intensity and character.

"There were seven minutes of extra time today but they were cool under pressure and cleared every dangerous moment."
