Sheffield Wednesday: Birmingham's loss at Hillsborough was '˜worst of season'

Wednesday ran out comfortable 3-0 winners courtesy of a Fernando Forestieri double and a Kieran Lee strike.

That result was Birmingham’s last league defeat – they have won four and drawn two since – and Rowett feels his side have shown their mettle since their Hillsborough disappointment.

As he prepares to welcome Wednesday to St Andrew’s this afternoon, Rowett is confident his side will get a result.

“We have won the last four home league games on the spin and only lost one in ten so we should be going into this very, very confident of what we are capable of achieving,” he said.

“I think it was one of our worst results of the season.

“Certainly in any game of football you can’t afford to give sloppy goals away and we gave two away.

“When we don’t play well, it’s when we lack a bit of fluidity when we win possession back and that’s something we’re trying to work hard on.

“But home games are completely different to away games.”

While confident of Birmingham’s chances this afternoon, Rowett admits Wednesday are a big threat.

“They are a good side. Any side that has got the likes of Forestieri can cause you problems.

“Barry Bannan dictating the game, they have lots of good players, it would be remiss of me to name all of them.

“Someone like Joao, a Portuguese international on the bench, shows you the strength in depth.

“Then they bring in the likes of Aiden McGeady from Everton. They have got lots of options and some very good players.”

Former Burton Albion boss Rowett denies his side are looking for revenge against Wednesday this afternoon.

He said: “I don’t think you ever really look at what the result was previously.

“People always say things like you’re out for revenge because you lost that one but I don’t think anyone within the four walls of the dressing room thinks like that.

“It’s just about can we go and win the next game.

“We know what we have to do and we know the sort of performance levels we have to put in.

“We’ve got to work harder than anyone else to win games of football and more often than not we’ve done that.”
