Sheffield Wednesday: Birmingham winger linked with £1.1m switch to Hillsborough

The Welsh international, who spent two years at Sheffield United, is believed to be attracting the interest of three Championship clubs, including the Owls.

Reports in South Wales claim Wednesday, Reading and Cardiff City are monitoring Cotterill’s situation.

It is thought Cotterill, who notched four goals and claimed six assists in 28 league outings for Birmingham last season, has a £1.1 million release clause in his contract.

Cotterill started his career at Bristol City. He has also previously represented Wigan Athletic, United, Swansea City, Portsmouth (loan), Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers before heading to St Andrews nearly two years ago.

The 28-year-oldhas flourished at Birmingham and his impressive form culminated in him receiving a two-year contract extension last August.

Cardiff-born Cotterill will be hoping to add to his 23 Wales caps when his side take on England in the European Championships today.

It is plausible Wednesday may enter the race to sign Cotterill as Carlos Carvalhal’s look light on numbers in the wide positions, with Aiden McGeady having returned to Everton following the expiry of his loan deal.

Carvalhal has promised to reshape his Owls squad after they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last term.

“We don’t need a revolution but we will try to improve the team,” he stated. “The players we try to bring in will give us more options and quality.”

Preparations have begun in earnest for next season and Carvalhal stressed: “We know all of our players very well.

“We know which positions we need one or another player.

“We will do our job now with the time we have.

“We will try to be more strong.”
