Sheffield Wednesday: Barry Bannan's focus is on club rather than international recall

Popular midfielder Barry Bannan has put thoughts of a Scotland recall on the back burner as he looks to help the Owls keep climbing up the Championship table.

Bannan, who signed a new three-year contract extension with Wednesday earlier this week, won the last of his 27 Scotland caps in October 2017.

And despite a series of eye-catching performances at club level this season, Bannan was left out of the Scotland squad on Monday. The Scots face World Cup semi-finalists Belgium and Albania next month.

Bannan said: "I'm just concentrating on playing well here and doing well for this club. If that gets recognised by Scotland then so be it.

"But my main job is to do well week in, week out for Sheffield Wednesday and then whatever comes comes."

The 28-year-old, the Owls' Player of the Month for August, is targeting a promotion tilt.

"Since I've come here, we have been close to getting to the Premier League apart from last season," said Bannan. "But I think this season we have got all the injured players back and I think we have got a chance again.

"I want to get this team into the Premier League and I'm sure all the other boys here want to do the same."
