The Owls midfield playmaker has not received a call-up on this occasion, with head coach Alex McLeish selecting seven uncapped players, including Hearts’ John Souttar and Jon McLaughlin.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been included along with Hibernian left-back Lewis Stevenson as part of McLeish’s 24-man squad.

Scotland travel to face Peru on May 29 followed by Mexico on June 2.

McLeish said: “There’s a lot of experience out of the squad, we could almost pick another 20-odd players. The squad are pretty much guys who have been in good form throughout the season.”

As for Bannan, who has been capped 27 times by his country, he is expecting a tough summer when the players report back for pre-season on June 25.

“I am expecting a tough pre-season, it will be our first pre-season under the gaffer,” said Bannan. “I’m sure it will involve a lot of running, a lot of fitness, a lot of hard work but it will be all worthwhile come the new season.

“We want to get back out there and give our best to get this club promoted back to the Premier League.”

Bannan played an instrumental part in the Owls’ strong finish to the 2017/18 season.

“It (the season) probably finished a little bit too quickly for us, we knew our form came too late in the season but it was important to get players back fit and get back to winning games,” he said.

“Hopefully now we can look forward, keep everybody fit, have a good off-season and get ready to come back firing.”
