Sheffield Wednesday 1 Middlesbrough 2: Owls player ratings

Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga both netted to deliver a suckerpunch to Wednesday who hit back late through another Adam Reach stunner.

Here we rate the individual efforts from the Owls from the defeat.

CAMERON DAWSON 6

The Owls keeper was not worked particularly hard by the opposition but, barring a couple of fluffed catches, performed admirably.

MICHAEL HECTOR 7

Wednesday's best performer on the night, particularly in the first half when he offered plenty but pushing forward into midfield. Showed some quality defensive work also.

TOM LEES 5

Certainly at fault for Middlesbrough's second goal and arguably could have done better with the first when he gave Besic far too much space, Lees looked incredibly uncomfortable on the ball and invited pressure on.

JORDAN THORNILEY 6

He coped well with Middlesbrough's pressure but his composure on the ball was, like plenty of his team mates, was not great with numerous misplaced passes.

LIAM PALMER 5

Playing as a wing back, Palmer had a tough time getting forward in a lacklustre performance.

JOEY PELUPESSY 5

Pelupessy really struggled to impose himself on the midfield and struggled to contain Middlesbrough, particularly in the second half.

BARRY BANNAN 6

Bannan struggled to offer his usual magic from midfield in a game where Wednesday's overall composure on the ball was lacking. He did deliver a few dangerous dead balls which his team mates failed to capitalise upon.

MATT PENNEY 6

Struggled to offer going forward what he has done in recent games but the youngster diddo a good job tracking and shutting out Boro wing back Ryan Shotton.

LUCAS JOAO 5

Lacking in any sort of consistency, Joao offered very little throughout in a disappointing performance which saw him fail to build on his explosive show off the bench in the previous game at Bristol City.

STEVEN FLETCHER 6

A typical workhorse performance from the striker who battled hard against a packed Middlesbrough defence in the first half but had little sight of goal throughout.

ADAM REACH 7

He will hit the headlines again with another stunning goal but he was also Wednesday's biggest threat throughout the night, particularly during a highly energetic first half performance.

SUB USED

ATDHE NUHIU 6

He was more of a threat than the man he replaced, Joao, as Nuhiu tried to impose himself when the ball was in the box. The striker was unlucky with a back post header in one of Wednesday's better chances in the second half.
