Sheffield University will get its ‘new heart’

A £10 million plan to link Sheffield University’s two oldest buildings has been approved.

The Heartspace scheme will connect the Grade II listed Mappin Building, on Mappin Street, with the 1855 Central Wing, and is part of the wider revamp of the university’s engineering faculty.

The project involves creating a glass atrium, while the Mappin Building and Central Wing will also undergo refurbishment. Councillors voted in favour of the proposals but expressed regret over the loss of a caretaker’s house.
