A Sheffield University dental researcher – who helped reveal the ‘serious impact’ of oral health on the heart – has been honoured with a global award for his ground-breaking study.

Professor Martin Thornhill, from the university’s clinical dentistry school, was presented with the distinguished scientist award for oral medicine and pathology by the International Association for Dental Research at a special ceremony in Boston, America.

A spokesman said: “The award recognises Prof Thornhill’s dedication to his field, especially his research which identified a significant rise in the number of people diagnosed with a serious heart infection alongside a fall in the prescribing of antibiotic prophylaxis to dental patients.”
