Sheffield University has urged the city council not to conduct an enivronmental assessment of its plans for a multi-million pound ‘super-lab’ on the edge of the city centre.

The Central Teaching Laboratory proposal does not require an Environmental Impact Assessment because the site is not in a conservation area, or area of outstanding natural beauty or site of special scientific interest, according to a report by contractor Montagu Evans.

The plea, lodged with the authority’s planning department, comes ahead of a planning application for the project.

The 'super-lab' would overlook the University of Sheffield tram stop on Upper Hanover Way.

An artist’s impression shows a striking building on Upper Hanover Street overlooking the University of Sheffield tram stop. It would require the demolition of a former Sainsbury’s Local and other buildings.

The university says it will be a ‘world class teaching facility’ which will have two 300-student laboratories and provide lab teaching needs for the Faculty of Science, the Medical Teaching Unit, Faculties of Arts and Humanities, social sciences, dentistry and health.

A planning application was due by the end of 2023. It is now set to be lodged in 2024, university chiefs say.
