Sheffield United: You can't buy success insists Wilder

Chris Wilder has warned the Championship's big-spenders that character, not cash, will ultimately decide next season's race for the Premier League.

The Sheffield United manager was speaking after backing his team to once again beat the financial odds following its top six challenge last term.

Stoke City, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, who lavished £13m on former Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho earlier this week.

Despite acknowledging deals of that nature remain beyond his reach, Wilder said: “The players have to bridge that gap, we have to bridge that gap in a creative way in how we play. What we do on the training ground at Shirecliffe, Monday to Friday.

We have to bridge that gap, we are not in that elite group. I am not being critical of anything, but we are not. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Wilder led United to a 10th placed finish last season, only a year after guiding them out of League One.

Despite the six point gap between themselves and sixth-placed Derby County, United entered the penultimate match of the campaign still chasing a play-off berth having beaten teams including Leeds, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday en route.

Wilder, who is yet to make his first signing of the summer, agreed an extended and improved contract last month.

“The lads showed what they are capable of and they should get even better because of the experiences they’ve had at this level now,” he said.

“Yes, we’re looking to bring some more quality in but we also expect those already here to carry on improving because of that knowledge and what they’ve picked-up.”
