But Wilder, whose team returns to League One action against Rochdale this weekend, acknowledged he could tweak “a couple of things” to ensure its translates performances into results.

“We’re not really happy, no, because we are here to win games of football,” Wilder told his pre-match press conference earlier today. “Things could easily have been different at the end of both games but they weren’t. I’m sure the win is around the corner so we’ll stick to the game plan. It’s just a finish here and a finish there.”

Wilder was speaking less than 48 hours after watching Crewe Alexandra knock United out of the EFL Cup with a 2-1 victory at Bramall Lane. Three days earlier, Jay Spearing’s first-half goal condemned Wilder’s team to a narrow 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers.

“There were a couple of bumps and bruises after Crewe,” he said. “Jack (O’Connell) was hobbling about a bit towards the end which wasn’t ideal. Then there were lads who have played 30 minutes more than we’d planned. But players are fit and strong enough to get through another 30 minutes of football. We’ll just temper our training to cope with it.”
