Sheffield United: Why supporters should not expect a flood of trialists to arrive at Bramall Lane

Despite offering David McGoldrick and Luke Steele the opportunity to earn contracts after finding themselves without a club, Wilder outlined the danger of throwing open the training ground doors to all and sundry ahead of the new Championship campaign.

But, speaking as his squad prepares to continue its pre-season programme at Mansfield Town this afternoon, he insisted United are "not snobby" about how they identify players, saying: "We'll only look at other trialists if they come with quality and Championship experience.

"I'm not a lover of it because we've got a tight group. We don't want to flood it with people on trial but, if somebody appears, then I will do. Fair play to anyone who is trying to get themselves fixed up."

McGoldrick, the former Ipswich Town and attacker, and Steele, previously of Bristol City, are both expected to feature at Field Mill after taking part in Tuesday's victory over Bradford. Although McGoldrick captured the imagination with an intelligent first-half display - "He showed his class," Wilder said afterwards - United's coaching staff will be particularly keen to see how Steele fares amid concerns about Simon Moore's future in South Yorkshire. Darren Ward, United's goalkeeping coach, has been working closely with the 33-year-old since United's return from Valley Parade and will contribute to the discussion about whether or not he should be offered a permanent deal. However, if Moore elects to stay despite interest from West Bromwich Albion, Steele will be forced to look elsewhere in his search for employment unless youngster Jake Eastwood departs on loan.

"It doesn't bother me where we get people from," Wilder said. "We are not snobby about it at all."
