Careless defending saw United squander a precious lead in their pivotal clash over top-six rivals Millwall last weekend, as the Lions left Bramall Lane delighted with a point from a 1-1 draw.

Wilder’s Blades now trail Neil Harris’ sixth-placed side by three points with only three games of the regular Championship season remaining and the 50-year-old, whose side travel to Birmingham City this weekend, admitted: “This isn’t through rose-tinted glasses or anything like that, but there’s a bit in the back of my mind that says we should be in a better place in the table.

“We’ve come up from League One and we’ve been outplayed a few times and taken a few ‘doings’, but people have seen enough of our games to know that we should be in a better position than the one we’re in. And the Millwall draw is another missed opportunity for us.

“But the players deserve an enormous amount of credit for the way they got off the deck after conceding a really poor goal, and the way they tried to drive the game forward.

“And for what they’ve done over my 100 games in charge, too; what they’ve given me as a group. They deserve immense credit for that. Now, we’ll go again and see if we can get a result at Birmingham this weekend.”
