Jacob Mellis, a graduate of Sheffield United’s academy, has made 22 appearances for Bury so far this season. He left Bramall Lane to join Chelsea but made only a single appearance, against MŠK Žilina, before leaving Stamford Bridge.

HISTORY LESSON

Bury completed a League One double over Sheffield United, then managed by Nigel Adkins, last season, beating them 3-1 at Bramall Lane in September before winning the return 1-0. Their last defeat at this stadium came in September 2011. Goalkeeper George Long who was a non-playing substitute, is the only member of the United squad which triumphed 4-0 who remains at the club. Harry Maguire, Matt Lowton and Stephen Quinn featured. However, United have won 46 of the previous meetings between these two teams. Bury have prevailed in 29 with 24 ending all-square. The first ever fixture between United and Bury at Bramall Lane ended in an 8-0 victory for the hosts. That was in April 1896. Bury had beaten United 1-0 earlier that term.

FORM GUIDE

Ross Joyce: The Teesside official took charge of Sheffield United’s opening game of the season at Bolton Wanderers. Leon Clarke was among two visiting players cautioned. Che Adams, now of Birmingham City, was the other. Joyce, who averages 4.6 yellow cards per game so far this term, has sent-off a player in each of his last two matches.
