Sheffield United squad is good enough for promotion, says David Edgar

David Edgar has insisted that Sheffield United's squad is capable of challenging for promotion from League One this term - even without any additions in the January transfer window.

United boss Nigel Adkins has revealed he is targeting a couple of additions this month, although the onus remains on trimming his bloated squad.

But Edgar, who scored the winning goal as United beat Colchester on Saturday to move within a point of the play-off places, issued a vote of confidence in the players already at Bramall Lane.

"As players, it’s our job to play football, not get involved with transfers and such like," the Canadian international defender said.

"But if someone comes in and helps us up the league, then that’s brilliant. If not, we already have a fantastic squad here so it’s not the end of the world if we don’t add anyone.

"We have a fantastic team spirit here and you can see that we’re working hard for each other out there. We’re getting fitter and stronger by the game and it’s a great unit... the lads who are playing, and the lads outside the squad, too.”

United, who saw Tom Eastman cancel out Billy Sharp’s early opener at Colchester before Edgar’s late intervention, return to Bramall Lane this weekend for only the second time this month to face Swindon Town.
