Sheffield United set to face a Wigan striker on a mission

Sheffield United will face a striker in '˜sensational' form on Saturday and one with ambitions that go even further than gaining promotion from League One at the end of this current campaign.

Fresh from a hat-trick against Port Vale last weekend, Will Grigg will arrive at Bramall Lane for the crunch clash with the Blades with praise from Latics boss Gary Caldwell ringing in his ears.

Grigg signed from Brentford in the summer having spent last season on loan at MK Dons and has so far hit 13 goals for Wigan with five of them coming in his last four games.

It is the type of form that the 24-year-old will hope can secure a place in the Northern Ireland squad for this summer’s European Championships in France.

And a player with that kind of focus can represent a huge threat to United’s bid to break into the play off places themselves this Saturday.

Caldwell’s priority, of course, has nothing to do with Northern Ireland’s first major championships since 1986, but the Scot has warned League One’s defences that having taken his time to settle at the DW Stadium, Grigg is fast becoming one of the most dangerous frontmen in the division.

“Strikers are always judged on goals and hopefully he can continue this form until the end of the season,” said Caldwell, whose side drew 3-3 with United three weeks ago, a match in which Grigg was on the scoresheet.

“He had a slow start to his Wigan career for a number of reasons - joining a new club, international call-ups, injuries. But you can see the quality he brings week in, week out,” said Caldwell.

“He’s a constant threat to centre-halves and, when he gets chances, more often than not he puts them away.

“I told him there would be goals here for him, and he’s gone and delivered,” the Latics boss added.

“He’s been sensational in recent games, to be fair. And he’s shown that when he gets chances he can score goals.”

And it’s not just Grigg.

“We’re scoring goals freely at the moment, which is always a good thing,” the Scot said.
