But how did United's players fare? Our man Danny Hall gives his ratings.

Relatively untroubled apart from a superb double save in the second half which saw him deny Celina and then James within a matter of seconds. Had little chance with Swansea's winner because of the quality of the cross
Dealt well with lively Roberts on the left wing and gave United an outlet down the right hand side with his pace in the first half. Tricky Celina was influental for Swans down their left.

Showed his importance to United when they changed their shape in the second half and he moved into midfield. Was unfortunate not to get on the end of one of Madine's knock-downs as United chased an equaliser
Dominant in the air in both boxes early on but was caught out by Dyer's intelligent one-two with van der Hoorn for Swansea's winner.
Outstanding despite defeat. Was alive to danger in first half when he came across to deny both Roberts and Routledge sights on goal and showed his ability going forward, too, with an inviting cross for Sharp. Denied McBurnie in the second half with a superb challenge
Very involved early on but struggled to consistently get in those areas where he can hurt teams on the overload. Was very harshly booked for a challenge at the end of the first half but a superb cross almost saw Sharp put United ahead
Helped drive United forward early on as the visitors dominated down the left hand side in the first half. Fleck was withdrawn for Madine as United changed their shape and looked for a way back into the game
Uncharacteristically gave then ball away a few times in the first half and was booked for a challenge on Roberts. Couldn't bring down McBurnie as he broke and got an earful from O'Connell for his troubles.
At the heart of everything good United did in the first half, including a superb cross which McGoldrick headed wide. Faded a little in the second half but gives defenders a constant headache throughout games. Withdrawn for Dowell just after Swans' goal.
Missed a glorious chance when he miscued his header from Duffy's superb cross and struggled to really impose himself on the game. Withdrawn for Clarke with ten minutes remaining
Missed a chance from Stevens' cross that he'd normally tuck away, Mulder making a good reaction save with his feet. Ran the channels well but will rue his only real chance of the game
Dowell - A lovely ball over the top saw Sharp shoot wide, but the flag was already up for offside. Showed one or two glimpses of his ability and should prove a useful addition for United for the season run-in
Gave United a different option when he came on, and showed his technical quality with an early chest-down and lay-off to McGoldrick. A few intelligent flick-ons and knock-downs couldn't be capitalised upon
Chucked on as the last throw of the dice for United as they sent three up top, but he couldn't get Chris Wilder's men back in the game
