Sheffield United: Opponents have no fear ahead of Lane test

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh is confident Rory Donnelly can spearhead his team's promotion challenge as centre-forward Dominic Samuel struggles to overcome a knee injury.

Samuel, on loan from Reading, is a major doubt for tomorrow’s game against Sheffield United after hobbling-out of last weekend’s draw with Coventry City.

Although his absence would deal a major blow to Gillingham’s hopes of forcing themselves back into the top two, Edinburgh has backed Donnelly to fill the void.

“It’s the first time he (Donnelly) has played at this level and I am pleased with what he has contributed this season,” Edinburgh said. “He has maybe been a bit critical of himself of late, in the dressing room and behind closed doors.

“His work-rate is second to none and he is a fantastic team player but I have said to him of late he probably needs to do a bit more work in and around the 18-yard box.”

Donnolly has scored 10 league goals for fourth placed Gillingham this term and Edinburgh, who could recall Bradley Dack after the midfielder made progress in his battle to overcome a hamstring complaint, added: “He is running here, there and everywhere and maybe he needs to channel that and get a little closer to Luke Norris, when he plays with him, and look to start getting back among the goals.”
