Sheffield United: '˜No financial mercenaries allowed'

Wilder, who is overseeing a major rebuilding project at Bramall Lane after taking an axe to its first team squad, told The Star that United’s days of being viewed as a soft touch financially are over on his watch.

“We are getting players chucked at us who we can’t get over the line as they are asking for too much money,” Wilder said. “It has to fit in with the financial aspect of it but we are working hard, whether its season long loans or permanent deals. In an ideal world, I’d like permanents.”

Wilder released 10 players and transfer listed another seven after being appointed United manager three weeks ago. Midfielders Dean Hammond, Martyn Woolford and Paul Coutts were among those declared surplus to requirements although the latter could still work his way into the new regime’s plans.

Wilder, who yesterday held a further round of contract talks with goalkeeper George Long, signed Mark Duffy and Chris Hussey earlier this week. Central defence is now his main area of concern following the departure of loanees David Edgar and Alex Baptiste.

“We will look and explore and ideally we’d like everyone back in the building before the 23rd when we start (pre-season training),” Wilder said. “But there might be a couple who are slow-burners.Centre half posiiton is one we definitely need to change pretty quickly.”

Meanwhile, United will unveil their new home strip at Doncaster Sheffield Airport on Tuesday. The League One club’s new major sponsor is also set to be announced at the event which Wilder, together with members of United’s playing staff, are scheduled to attend. Sheffield based firm Doordeals agreed a three-year deal to become United’s ‘back of shirt’ sponsor last week.
