The midfielder, a graduate of Sheffield United’s Steelphalt Academy, made the admission after forcing himself back into Nigel Adkins’ starting eleven this month.

Although several of Reed’s contemporaries have been allowed to depart on loan in search of regular first team football, the teenager said: “I am just happy to be back out there (playing).

“Sheffield United is a big club, and the football we are playing at the minute is good.

“I can be better but I am more than happy to be learning my way at Sheffield United.”

Reed, aged 18, has appeared in exactly half of the 40 fixtures United have contested so far this season and is expected to be named in the squad which visits Rochdale on Saturday.

“There’s a lot of good players here, a big squad, so there is always going to be competition for places,” he added. “I can learn plenty from those around me.”
