Brown was speaking ahead of this afternoon’s meeting with Port Vale where, after winding down his playing career, he is now a key member of Bruno Ribeiro’s backroom staff.

The 39-year-old made over 170 appearances for United after arriving from Manchester City in 2000 and was a member of the teams which, under Neil Warnock’s tutelage, reached the last four of both major domestic cup competitions and Championship play-off final in 2003.

“I always look forward to going back to Sheffield United,” Brown said. “It is a fantastic club with great support and I had four great years there. Every time I go back I get looked after and they never forget what a good team we had there. I can’t wait to get there and just be back in the stadium which always gives me a great feeling.”

Chris Wilder, the United manager, yesterday acknowledged Brown deserved a good reception from the home crowd to recognise his contribution before joining Tottenham Hotspur 12 years ago.

Brown, Vale’s assistant manager, said: “It is a great test. It will be another big team in League One. We have to be ready for a big atmosphere with 20,000 there. It will be the biggest crowd we have faced this year and the type of football will be another test so bring it on.”
