Marc McNulty is 'excited' about the prospect of working for Chris Wilder.

The Sheffield United striker helped Portsmouth reach the League Two play-offs last season after being dispatched to Fratton Park on loan.

Although McNulty has previously expressed frustration at his lack of opportunities under Wilder’s predecessor Nigel Adkins - “I’m not going to deny I was a bit disappointed not to have been given more of a chance,” he said - he is confident things will be different this time around.

“I’m looking forward to coming back and trying to impress the new manager,” McNulty said. “It’s a fresh start and I’m going to be doing everything I can to try and show him what I can do.

“I’ve improved a lot as a player in the meantime. So it’s up to me to show that in pre-season. You are always excited when someone new comes in and I’ll be giving my all. Obviously with what he (Wilder) did before coming, he’s got a great reputation. So I’m sure I’m going to be able to learn even more from him and his team.”

Wilder, who lifted the League Two title with Northampton Town last term, is the third manager McNulty has worked under since joining United from Livingston in May 2014. Portsmouth are known to be keen on acquiring the 23-year-old’s services permanently after he scored 12 goals in 25 starts on the south coast.

Although McNulty has indicated he would be interested in returning if United allow him to leave Bramall Lane, he said: “I’m a Sheffield United player, I’m contracted to Sheffield United and I’ve been told to report back for pre-season training. That’s all I’m focused on now, doing my best for Sheffield United. And that’s all I will ever be focused on unless I’m told otherwise.”
