Mark Duffy, the Sheffield United forward, has set the record straight after rumours began to circulate online of an altercation with teammate Paul Coutts.

The ‘incident’ happened on Sunday evening at United’s player of the year awards night, and speculation spread online that Duffy and Coutts had come to blows.

But the Liverpudlian, who is understood to be close to Scottish midfielder Coutts, quashed the rumours on Twitter today.

He replied to a fan: ”We weren’t fighting... just something me and Couttsy do when we’re out... see who can catch each other off guard.

“I pushed him off the chair at the awards. He found it funny.”

Duffy then added that ‘everything is fine’ with a thumbs-up emoji, later replying: “It’s not the cleverest game we play, I admit!”

Duffy was crowned United's player of the year at The Star's annual football awards on Monday evening, with boss Chris Wilder and No.2 Alan Knill accepting the award on his behalf.

His award citation read: "It tells you all you need to know about how well Sheffield United have performed this season that four or possibly five players could easily have won this award. Indeed, some can justifiably feel hard done by that they haven't. The judges thought long and hard before reaching a decision.

"They argued, albeit politely, too. Picking-out an individual from a team that is a team in the true sense of the word was never going to be an easy task. But the recipient of this season's award is someone who does things a little bit differently. One whose intelligence and movement enabled him to score a crucial goal in arguably the club's most talked about victory of an impressive season."

United also won the team of the year award, and David Brooks was named the region's young player of the year while Tony Currie picked up the Derek Dooley Lifetime Achievement award. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his Blades debut and Currie is still involved at Bramall Lane.
