Sheffield United: Manager Chris Wilder takes aim at folk who claim good players invariably cost big money following David McGoldrick's arrival at Bramall Lane

If, as he suspects, David McGoldrick is a big hit at Bramall Lane, the former Ipswich Town attacker will become the latest supposedly unfashionable player whose career Chris Wilder has transformed.The Sheffield United manager boasts an enviable track record of identifying free or cut price signings who go on to become key members of the Championship club's squad, as John Fleck, Leon Clarke and Jack O'Connell can all testify.So, despite acknowledging United must shop in a "different market" to further their promotion aspirations, Wilder has no time for those who correlate a footballer's ability and the size of his fee."I quite like a left field signing every now and then," Wilder, who recruited McGoldrick earlier this week following a successful trial, said. "I'm not bothered where players come from or how they arrive at the football club, so long as they've got ability."Who would have thought John, Jack and Leon were going to go on and do what they have? Nobody was expecting it outside of the club because they didn't cost a fortune. On the inside, we weren't bothered about it because we knew what they could do, what they were capable of and how they would improve. David falls into exactly the same bracket. He's a talented footballer with a good attitude who should improve the group."McGoldrick, aged 30, has agreed a one year contract which could be extended by another 12 months if he hits certain performance related targets. Previously of Southampton and Nottingham Forest, McGoldrick brings a wealth of experience having also represented the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City before arriving at Portman Road."David wants to be here," Wilder said. "He made that pretty clear with how he's been since coming in. In the games he's played for us so far, you can see the qualities he's got and what he brings to to table. He's a top drawer player who fits into the group as a whole well."
