Blades new boy David McGoldrick and Argentinian international Mauro Icardi traded goals in front of 18,883 fans at Bramall Lane, United's only home friendly ahead of their season opener against Swansea on August 4.

And Spalletti, who saw Brazilian full-back Dalbert stretchered off after a 50/50 challenge with John Lundstram, said: "The game went very well because they’re already in great shape.

"We played at a stadium that had a good atmosphere and there was a sense of excitement and we stood up to it well.

"The team was ready to respond. At a certain point, we changed our tactical approach during the game. Overall, we showed that we have intelligent players in our squad who can get along with one another. "

Inter finished fourth in Serie A last season and fielded big names like Samir Handanović and Antonio Candreva alongside Icardi. United goalkeeper Dean Henderson managed to grab the shirt of Handanović after the game, while Leon Clarke walked away with Icardi's.

"It was a great night for our football club, to entertain an absolute giant of European football and it was a proper game," said Blades boss Chris Wilder.

"Both teams wanted to win, both wanted to play and make tackles and it was a great experience for my players to play against a team with such quality all over the park.

"It was an even game, we enjoyed a good first half hour or so, we scored and forced them to change their shape. It has been a fantastic effort for the people involved in getting Inter over to play us and for those that have come out to attend the game."

"It wasn't just a night for United fans, it was a night for the region to come and watch Inter and to get nearly 19,000 inside the stadium for a friendly is unbelievable really," Wilder added.

"I was disappointed on Saturday but not surprised by the reaction of my players. Henderson was tidy and made a great save, John Egan was fantastic for 70 minutes having being thrown into a back three and David McGoldrick combined well with Leon and took his goal fantastically well."
