Police have appealed for witnesses to an attack after Sheffield United's friendly at Grimsby Town.

A 46-year-old man suffered multiple injuries in an unprovoked assault following Saturday’s match.

The self-employed electrician – whose family has asked not to be named – had attended the game alone.

He was taking his regular route home along the sea front when he was attacked.

The victim, found by police officers at around 5.45pm on a grassed area, and remains in hospital in a serious condition.

He is very slim and was wearing distinctive anorak-style jacket and blue jeans.

This route was taken by numerous people leaving Blundell Park after the match.

Investigating officers are keen to speak to anyone with information, urging witnesses to call 101, quoting log 212 of July 23.
