One of Sheffield United’s oldest fans has celebrated his 101st birthday.

Frank Wheater, of Sanctuary’s Park View residential care home in Shiregreen, said the secret to reaching such an impressive age was partly down to watching his favourite team play.

The former Edmund Road resident said: “The occasional whisky in my tea has helped, hard work, plenty of fresh air, fishing and watching my favourite football team – Sheffield United.”

Frank, who is also a huge fan of Elvis Presley, is well known at Park View for his wicked sense of humour.

He and his late wife, Eva, had three children - Frank, Eva and Norma - who still live in South Yorkshire. Frank has five grandchildren and three great grandchildren

Frank worked as a moulder in the Brightside and Clarks foundries, and during the war he used his skills to make bullets and ammunition for the war effort.

Talking about her father’s infectious personality, daughter Eva Smith said: “He has a wink in his eye if he is having someone on and is a very happy-go-lucky man.

“He loves a cooked breakfast – bacon, egg, sausage and tomatoes is his favourite. He loves his food and is a very good eater – if he’s not eating you know there’s something wrong.”
