Washington didn't have a straightforward route to professional football '“ he worked as a postman while playing for St Ives Town, where he bagged 52 goals in 50 matches to seal a move to Newport County.

Kent-born Washington's £5,000 move to Newport in 2012 was the start of his rapid rise from non-league to international football in the space of just four years.

In terms of his playing style, Washington plays on the shoulder of the last defender to make runs in behind, which worked to great effect for Norther Ireland at Euro 2016.

Here's what people have to say about Washington'¦

Speaking about the Northern Ireland star's playing style, national team manager Michael O'Neill said: 'Conor gives you that energy at the top of the pitch. He likes to fight for the ball.'

QPR boss Steve McClaren: 'We brought Conor in because we felt we needed some energy and pace running in behind the defence, and he certainly brought that. He got us up the field instead of being pressed and we had an outlet which he provided.'

Chris Wilder: 'It is common knowledge that we have been searching for a striker and a lot of names have been bandied about around the media.

'Conor ticks a lot of boxes in what we are looking for at the top of the pitch, he's got pace, power and works hard, a good fit for us.'
