According to sources on the south coast, Eddie Howe’s side are set to make a £12m downpayment, followed by a further £3m in performance related instalments, after winning the race for the player’s services.

Brooks, aged 20, emerged as one of the most sought-after talents in the Championship after impressing for Chris Wilder’s team last term.

Although United are thought to have rejected a £10m offer for the Wales international ahead of the January transfer window, officials at the Vitality Stadium yesterday made a breakthrough in their negotiations with United and the youngster’s representatives.

Bramall Lane’s hierarchy, who are also believed to have inserted a sell-on clause into the proposed agreement, made no secret of the fact they wanted Brooks to remain in South Yorkshire and persuaded him to commit his future to the Championship club until 2021 eight months ago.

But, together with Wilder and his coaching staff, they feared that commitment would be tested after being informed Brooks had changed agents; joining the same talent stable as Wilfried Zaha, former United centre-forward Che Adams and England striker Harry Kane.

Tottenham Hotspur had also been monitoring Brooks since he progressed through United’s youth system but, unlike Bournemouth, they failed to follow up their interest.
