McGoldrick, the former Ipswich Town attacker, is believed to be undergoing a medical with Chris Wilder's side ahead of tonight's friendly against Internazionale at Bramall Lane.

The development comes after the 30-year-old produced another impressive performance during last weekend's visit to Mansfield Town, which followed his man-of-the-match display at Bradford City four days earlier.United have moved to offer McGoldrick a contract in a bid to ward-off interest from elsewhere after Wilder acknowledged his skills would prove attractive to "most" Championship teams. Crucially, his contributions at both Valley Parade and Field Mill appear to support Mick McCarthy's theory that commuting from Nottingham caused the fitness issues which overshadowed the player's final year at Portman Road. Wilder revealed he spoke at length with McCarthy, the former Town manager, before offering McGoldrick a trial.McGoldrick could join fellow new arrivals John Egan and Dean Henderson in United's starting eleven for the meeting with Inter, which kicks-off at 7.30pm. Before the match, United will unveil their rebranded Tony Currie stand, named in honour of the legendary midfielder.
