Sheffield United: '˜Chris will bring the fear factor back to Bramall Lane'

Chris Wilder will transform Sheffield United's fortunes by ensuring Bramall Lane is a ground where opponents fear to tread.

Alan Knill issued his prediction after being confirmed as the new manager’s assistant following Nigel Adkins’ dismissal last week.

Wilder, a United supporter and former player, took charge when his predecessor paid the price for leading the club to its lowest league finish for over 30 years.

Knill told The Star: “Chris knows the culture of the city. He knows the people and he knows the football club. He understands what the fans want.

“We’re not stupid enough to think that it’s an easy job. The history of the managers shows that and the craving for success is really high. But we’re not fazed. If we were, we wouldn’t have taken it. We could have stayed at Northampton, in a relatively comfortable job if you like. We want to do something with a big club and, trust me, this is as big as it comes.”

Wilder, who won the League Two title at Sixfields last season, emphasised the importance of “sticking together” when he was unveiled five days ago. United, who have named Stephen Bettis as their new chief executive, were beaten eight times on home soil during Adkins’ 11 month reign; their worst return since being relegated from the Championship in 2011.

“If you get this going, you can be in the Premier League,” Knill said. “And that’s where everyone, supporters, players and staff, wants to be.

“The first thing though, is going to be turning it around and playing in a manner the fans want to see. Bringing in players who represent the shirt and then seeing where that takes you.

“We won’t get carried away and we know what we have to do.”
