Sheffield United: Chris Wilder reveals battle to sign Liverpool's Ben Woodburn

The Liverpool youngster has been consistently linked with a loan move to United as he looks to get more first team experience away from Anfield.

Woodburn, 18, would be a replacement for David Brooks who left the Blades for Bournemouth in a £12million deal at the start of July.

Although he is highly thought of by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, Woodburn has fallen down the pecking order in the last year and it looks unlikely he will get regular game time soon with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all on fire last term.

Liverpool's youngest ever goalscorer is also wanted by Norwich City and Wigan Athletic, but United boss Wilder has suggested that he's willing to fight hard to secure the Welsh international.

Speaking to Alan Biggs on Talking Sheffield, Wilder said: "We work really hard in our recruitment, we're not a scattergun approach. We don't just pluck names off of other people or out of newspapers."

"We are battling it out with extremely wealthy and powerful football clubs. We have to go about it in our way whether it's a loan signing or whether it's a permanent signing. We feel we've not got everything right in the transfer window but if you look at a lot of clubs now they have to move players on.

"They have to sell players because they've spent enormous money on wages, they've spent enormous money on transfer fees and they're breaking teams up."

Woodburn is just one attacking option Wilder is monitoring, with Ipswich Town striker Martyn Waghorn, Aston Villa forward Scott Hogan and Southampton's Sam Gallagher all still targets.

United broke their transfer record with the signing of central defender John Egan from Brentford for an undisclosed fee in excess of £4million.
