Sheffield United: Chris Morgan remembers his finest hour

And, ten years after captaining them to promotion, the former centre-half is looking forward to meeting other members of Neil Warnock’s squad when he returns to Bramall Lane tomorrow.

“Being part of the promotion team of 05/06 was without doubt the most memorable time of my career,” Morgan said. “Not only was it one of the most successful times but also the enjoyment of spending time training, playing and socialising with that group of players was fantastic.”

Morgan, now assistant manager of United’s League One rivals Chesterfield, made 281 appearances for United between 2003 and 2012 after leaving Barnsley. Forced to retire due to a serious knee injury sustained following the club’s controversial relegation from the top-flight, he later became a member of their coaching staff.

“People always speak about the camaraderie a group of players have when they achieve something and those were special times that will never be forgotten,” Morgan added. “I can’t wait for the chance to meet up with everyone again.”

Morgan, aged 38, is scheduled to captain the Blades Legends XI when they face the Fulham All-Stars in a match designed to raise funds for a number of causes including the Steelphalt Academy, Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids and United’s Former Players’ Association. Michael Tonge, Rob Kozluk and Leigh Bromby are also set to appear alongside the likes of Brian Deane, Tony Agana and Michael Brown.

Paul Peschisolido, who represented both clubs during his career, has confirmed his attendance while Rufus Brevett and Barry Hayles, the former United striker, will feature for the visitors.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with the lads and to be back out on the pitch at Bramall Lane,” said Morgan. “I’m sure most of us won’t be able to play at the speed we used to but I’d imagine there’d still be some quality on show from both teams.”
