Done netted a brace either side of Sharp’s header as United earned a point at the DW Stadium - and Adkins believes his side showed they will keep up the battle for automatic promotion to the Championship.

“Matty will run all day, he’s a threat and he’s scored twice,” Adkins said.

“There are things he can work on but what’s important for me, is to keep reminding people what they can do. Not what they can’t do.

“You’ve seen out there what Billy offers us, he can drive us on; he’s scored again, so he’s in a good run of form, and he could have scored early on, too. We created chances against a very good side, it’s a point away from home but it’s more than that.

“We came from three down and showed character, grit, spirit and determination.

“That’s the minimum requirement to play for Sheffield United, and we showed it in abundance out there.”

The result lifts United to seventh in the League One table - three points behind sixth-placed Peterborough ahead of Saturday’s trip to Colchester.

“We know it’s a big ask to get in the top two,” Adkins continued.

“But it’s a challenge we are ready to take on.”

“They have shown they never know when they are beaten and that they will never give up. Ever.

“Yes, it was a point. A draw against a very good side.

“But because of the way those lads have got it, how they dragged themselves back, that could be a catalyst for things to come.”

United return to action this weekend, when they travel to Colchester.
