A video emerged on Twitter in midweek of the Bolton striker insulting Sharp, who has netted 21 goals and propelled his beloved Blades to the top of League One.

Although it's not clear when the clip was filmed, Bolton boss Phil Parkinson was understood to have taken a dim view of the incident and Madine was left out of his 18-man squad to face the Blades.

Madine travelled to Bramall Lane with the Bolton squad, and emerged from the team coach to a chorus of boos.

Blades boss Chris Wilder said in midweek: “It shows a lack of respect criticising any fellow player, it’s tough being a professional footballer.

He won’t be the first, and won’t be the last. “No doubt, along the way, there will be a Sheffield United player who has done something in the same vein. But he’s our captain, it’s a family issue. When you criticise someone in your family, he’s criticising all of us. It’s a bit of lack of respect for our football club.”
